Common mistakes to avoid
Mistake
A sub in a corner of an untreated rectangular room creates a 6–10 dB bass node where you sit. Treat corners first; otherwise the sub makes mixes thinner on consumer systems, not fuller.
Mistake
Most main monitors handle down to 50 Hz cleanly. Crossing the sub at 80–100 Hz wastes the mains and muddies the kick. 60–70 Hz is closer to right for most pairs.
One more thing every mix engineer owns
Mixing reference headphones
The mastering-studio reference, in a pair you can own.
Open-back, neutral midrange, the headphone many mastering engineers use as a sanity check against their main rig. The honest second opinion when your monitors are wrong.
